ABOUT

Born in Lansing, MI in 1995, Amanda J. Kendrick was a fierce three sport athlete who carried over her competitive spirit and hardworking drive into her studio practice. She graduated from Albion College with a BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in Painting and a Minor in Art History. Trained as an oil painter, Kendrick went on to get her MFA at Purdue University with a focus on Painting and Sculpture. While at Purdue, Kendrick taught for five years, subjects including Beginning Drawing, Intro to Painting, and Sculpture.
Kendrick has exhibited her work nationally and has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in traditional and experimental spaces. She was awarded the Purdue Distinguished Creative Master's Award for her thesis exhibition in 2021, a Penland Partner Scholarship through Purdue University in 2020, and was the Suzanne Wilson Artist-in-Residence in Glen Arbor, MI in 2022, among many other awards and publications.
Her current body of work, Return to Sender, is an exploration of the artist's personal relationships. Modes of communication such as mail and Facebook have impacted her familial relationships, thus the meaning behind the title of the series. Collected family photographs and sourced film imagery are utilized to make collages which are then used as references for the final large-scale oil paintings on canvas.
Kendrick makes her own clothes and enjoys experimenting with all sorts of fabrics and materials including cement, wax, and found objects. She works and lives in Asheville, NC with her husband and their 5lb dog.
