Ninth Street Installation

In 2019, a group of artists were given the opportunity to transform a space into individual installations. The building had a long history, including serving as a personal care home for elderly folks. The interior of the building had low ceilings and dark, wood-paneled walls. This building served as the final home for groups of people and nothing about the space evoked warmth.

My installation was outside, on the side of the building, intentionally away from the crowded and stifling interior, where there was room to breathe. Each element was placed in response to what was already there. Lights were used to cast shadows from the intricate decorative blocks behind the staircase. Areas were painted or wiped away in order to make a complete composition when viewed from the street. When viewers come closer to the space, a type of bedroom formed. There was a cement pillow, a quilted blanket made from ironed plastic, and a neon green rug covered with wax. A hanging inflatable sculpture twists in the wind as collected audio plays. This dreamlike space becomes the final resting place.
