The Weather Station Presents “Return to Sender”

A solo exhibition of new oil paintings and sculpture by Amanda J. Kendrick.

Exhibition date: September 20-October 26 with the gallery open Friday and Saturday 12-4pm. Artist reception September 20 from 6-8pm.

My show @the.weather.station is up through next weekend, check it out if you’re in the Lafayette area.

I’ve been in limbo after everything that’s happened in Asheville and with my family, but I do have new paintings in the works.

I’ve been collecting VHS tapes and imagery from films that remind me of my brother. Through collage, I can cut and separate and manipulate parts of the imagery that I always felt were some of our biggest connection points as siblings who are 14 years apart.

The title, “Try to keep from callin’” is a lyric from the song Sadness is a Gift by Adrianne Lenker which I overheard while painting this piece. It resonated very strongly with me.

Oscar is 1! 🎈🧁This is the first fabric book I’ve made and it was so fun! I did the drawings in Procreate and printed them along with the photos through Spoonflower. The pages have some hand embroidery and felt and there is tissue paper sandwiched between for a bit of crinkle. Not every page is included here. I’m so happy I could gift it to him in person along with the crown I made (last slide).

I tried my best to track my progress on this painting over the two months I spent on it. I had created a collage using photographs I had taken of my environment at the time combined with found paper and it became a piece about fragmenting ones location, extremely relevant as I had just made a major move. It also seemed fitting to take a small collage and blow it up into a large oil painting, further abstracting some of the broken imagery. I originally thought the composition worked best horizontally, but I settled on the portrait orientation with one of the recognizable objects, the clamp, at the bottom. I’m in the works of making more collages to use as painting reference.
